There are several forms of starting system for diesel generator sets
The process of starting the internal combustion engine of a diesel generator set by pushing the crankshaft with external force in a stationary state is called starting. The device required to complete the start-up is called the start-up system, and there are four common start-up methods: manual start-up, electric motor start-up, compressed air start-up, and auxiliary gasoline engine start-up.
1. Manual start: For small diesel engines below 15kw, manual start is generally used, usually by directly rotating the crankshaft with a crank, rope, etc; Some four stroke internal combustion engines rotate the crankshaft at an increasing speed through the camshaft. Diesel engines that are manually started must be equipped with a pressure reducing mechanism.
2. Electric motor starting: Modern high-speed diesel engines typically use a series excited low-voltage DC motor powered by a battery as the starter, which is compact in structure, easy to operate, and can be remotely controlled. The power of the starter motor is generally 0.6~10kw, the voltage is 12/24V, the current is above 200A, and the continuous working time each time should not exceed 15S.
3. Compressed air start: There are two methods for starting compressed air: one is to use an air distributor to send high-pressure air with a pressure of 3000~5000kpa into each cylinder in the order of internal combustion engine operation, directly pushing the piston to start the engine; Another method is to use compressed air to drive an air motor, which in turn drives the engine to start.
4. Auxiliary gasoline engine starting: The auxiliary gasoline engine starting method is commonly used for diesel engines in construction machinery, mining machinery, and large and medium-sized tractors. Start the gasoline engine manually first, and then use the gasoline engine to start the diesel engine through the transmission mechanism. The cooling system of the starter is the same as that of the main engine. After the starter is started, the main engine can be preheated. This method can ensure reliable starting of diesel engines at lower ambient temperatures, and the starting time and frequency are not limited. But its transmission mechanism is relatively complex and inconvenient to operate, and the total weight and volume of the diesel engine will also increase.
At present, the commonly used method for starting diesel engines is the second method mentioned above - electric motor starting, which is convenient and fast.
